Thank you for VOTING ENVIRONMENT!

Hello Green Voters,

This is a very exciting time. From the Presidential election to our local races for the Vermont Senate and House, it is clear that Vermonters care deeply for our environment.

In 2008, VLCV endorsed 107 candidates for the Vermont legislature. Ninety of our 107 endorsed candidates were victorious meaning VLCV had an 85% success rate during the 2008 election cycle. This is a great first step towards accomplishing our mission of turning your environmental values into state priorities!

VLCV's highest priority was to defeat three anti-environment House members: Joyce Errecart (Lifetime Environmental Scorecard score of 48%), Kitty Oxholm (Lifetime Environmental Scorecard score of 40%), and Judy Livingston (Lifetime Environmental Scorecard score of 19%). In all three races our endorsed candidate was victorious. However, in the Manchester race, Jeff Wilson holds a razor thin 5 vote lead and there will very likely be a recount.

As for the other two high priority races, VLCV would like take this moment to congratulate Representative elect Diane Lanpher of Vergennes and Representive elect Kate Webb of Shelburne on their victories. We are optimistic and look forward to offering similar sentiments to Jeff Wilson once the recount has been completed.

VLCV also worked to defend a number of pro-environment incumbents. We were able to help ensure that Representative Joan Lenes of Shelburne, Representative John Moran of Wardsboro, Representative Kristy Spengler of Colchester, Representative Peg Andrews of Rutland City, Representative Gale Courcelle of Rutland City and Representative David Zuckerman of Burlington were all re-elected.

Post Election

While we are are extremely happy with the legislative election results our work is not finished.  VLCV will immediately turn its attention to the upcoming legislative session.  We are currently working closely with our partners in the Vermont Environmental Collaborative to finalize our priorities for the upcoming legislative session.  These priorities will be reflected in the Environmental and Conservation Platform.  To see either the 2007 and 2008 Platform or a list of the environmental organizations that are members of the Collaborative, please got to our website.

In 2009, VLCV will be right there working with our partners in the State House to ensure that we achieve the renewable energy future Vermonters desire, that we continue to make land conservation a priority, that Vermont Yankee closes in 2012, and that Vermont’s transportation future relies less on expensive new highway projects and relies more on public transportation which strengthens our existing downtowns.

We could not have achieved the election results we did without your support and we can’t successfully advocate on your behalf in Montpelier with out your generous support either.  Please consider donating to VLCV so we can continue working to turn your environmental values into state priorities!

Best Wishes,

Todd Bailey
